Buick Encore GX Review

The subcompact SUV segment is fiercely competitive, and Buick has given its Encore GX model a refresh for the 2024 model year to help it stand out. This updated Buick Encore GX brings revised exterior styling, a new infotainment system, a premium Avenir trim level, and an updated Buick logo.

Under the hood, front-wheel drive 2024 Encore GX SUVs come equipped with either a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 137 horsepower or a slightly punchier 1.3-liter turbo three-cylinder making 155 hp. Both mate to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). If you opt for the all-wheel drive Buick Encore GX, you'll get the 1.3-liter turbo engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Buick Encore GX Review

In our performance testing, the all-wheel drive Encore GX demonstrated strong acceleration, but the three-cylinder engine exhibited a harsh, gravelly sound and some vibrations, especially at lower engine speeds. Handling felt responsive and secure, though the ride quality erred on the firm side for a subcompact SUV.

The Encore GX's cabin presents a mixed bag - there are premium touches like available leather upholstery, but they feel unevenly applied throughout the interior. Rear seat space is also quite cramped for the subcompact SUV class. It's worth noting that advanced safety tech like highway speed automatic emergency braking is not available, even as an option.

Overall, the refreshed 2024 Buick Encore GX brings some welcome updates like the new infotainment tech and premium Avenir model. It remains a solid, if imperfect, choice among affordable subcompact SUV offerings. Pricing, fuel efficiency, interior space and refinement will likely be the key factors for buyers considering the Encore GX against rivals like the Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30 and Honda HR-V.
